The City of Fulton Fire Department also assures the surrounding departments that, in their time of need, we will respond rapidly when called, with whatever equipment and personnel that can be safely sent out of town.
The members of the City of Fulton Fire Department, both career and paid on call, pride themselves in maintaining a level of readiness that assures the public the best emergency response service that the City of Fulton can afford.
Overview
The Fulton Fire Department was established in 1892. They responded to emergencies both in the City of Fulton, as well as in the rural areas. In the mid 1970’s the Fire Department took on the added responsibility of running the ambulance service. Personnel worked diligently every year to collect enough money from ambulance memberships to be able to operate throughout the year. In the early 1990’s the City of Fulton Fire Department had to limit its rural areas response to mutual aid requests from other departments. It currently has an automatic mutual aid agreement with the fire department in South Fulton, Tennessee.
Today the Fire Department responds to an average of 150 calls per year out of one centralized station with two engines, a ladder truck, one brush/utility vehicle, and two command vehicles. There are 17 paid personnel, and 25 paid on call.
In July, 2000 the ambulance service was placed under an independent Board and the name was
changed to the Twin City Ambulance Service. It is still operated by the same personnel that serve on the Fire Department.
Since the ambulance service merged in January 2006 with Hickman Ambulance Service, Twin City Ambulance Service account for 1800-2000 responses each year. The Ambulance Service reimburses the City of Fulton for fourteen of the seventeen salaries, thereby keeping personnel on duty for a quicker response to medical emergencies.
